A juvenile humpback whale was seen frolicking just kilometres from the Sydney Harbour entrance, to the awe of lucky onlookers on Thursday.

About 70 whale watchers mostly on board boats were lucky enough to see the animal breaching in spectacular style as it launched itself out of the ocean before crashing on its back and sending water flying.

Many beachgoers lured to the coast by Sydney's balmy conditions were in for a treat on Saturday, with as many as 10 humpback whales turning out to mark the start of Sydney's whale-watching season.

The tally "is a phenomenal number for this early in the season", said Jonas Liebschner from Whale Watching Sydney.

Two humpbacks were spotted playing with a pod of dolphins off Bondi in the morning, followed by another five in the same area during the afternoon.

We are only one day away from our 2014 Whale Watching season.

As always this season should be our best yet, with whale numbers expected to be as high as never before.

To be fair, that's what we always say before each season, but it is actually true with Humpback Whale numbers rising by about 10% each year. That means we should expect to see about 20.000 making their way north just on the east coast of Australia alone and with a similar number off the west coast of Australia.

We have come towards the end of the northern migration, which means we don't see whales travelling north any more.

All whales have now gone up north to give birth and to mate, but we already see the first return south again as well, so we still get to see whales every day.
